R290 has relatively good thermal performance. In the operation of heat pump units, it can effectively improve the energy efficiency of the heat pump, absorbing more heat during the evaporation process and releasing more heat during the condensation process. The coefficient of performance (COP) of an R290 heat pump is 5%-15% higher than that of an R410A heat pump. Its low-temperature performance in winter heating is superior, maintaining a COP of over 2.5 even in -15°C environments, which is much higher than the approximately 2.0 of R410A heat pumps, addressing the severe drop in efficiency of traditional heat pumps in winter low temperatures. In addition, R290 has a lower exhaust temperature, which can reduce compressor wear and extend the service life of the heat pump unit.
R290 can meet the supply of domestic hot water throughout the year. When heating is not needed, the system operates independently. During the process of needing heating or cooling, it utilizes the system's residual heat to heat domestic water, making full use of energy, improving system efficiency, and reducing the required costs.
In commercial buildings with higher comfort requirements, R290 is often a good choice. The R290 heat pump can provide stable heating and cooling while meeting the demand for domestic hot water. It does not produce environmentally harmful substances, is environmentally friendly and efficient, and can operate stably.
R290 is a colorless and odorless hydrocarbon whose thermodynamic properties highly match the requirements of heat pump systems:
Excellent heat transfer performance
The cooling capacity per unit volume of R290 is 1.9 times that of R134a, and its thermal conductivity is 20% higher than that of R134a, which means that a system using R290 can transfer more heat with the same heat exchange area.
Ideal pressure characteristics
The evaporation and condensation pressures of R290 are similar to those of R22, so system design does not require major modifications, enabling a smooth replacement of traditional heat pump systems.
Outstanding low-temperature adaptability
Even in low temperatures of -25℃, R290 heat pumps can still maintain stable heating capacity, with a COP (coefficient of performance) of over 1.5, far superior to traditional refrigerant systems.
Efficient energy performance
R290 has an insulation index of 1.13, which is 10% lower than R134a, resulting in lower energy consumption during the compressor compression process and higher overall system efficiency.
The variable frequency adjustment function of R290 can regulate its operating status at any time according to indoor temperature and load requirements. This not only maintains indoor comfort but also reduces energy consumption. R290 is now widely used; some large commercial buildings also use R290 heat pumps, mainly for heating and cooling in central air conditioning systems, while also recovering waste heat from air conditioning to achieve energy recycling.
R290 can meet the integrated needs of heating, cooling, and domestic hot water supply, maintaining indoor comfort while also meeting the high domestic water demand of hotels.
The application scenarios of R290 heat pumps are continuously expanding, from residential homes to commercial buildings, industrial production, and the automotive sector, gradually achieving comprehensive coverage. At the same time, end-user acceptance continues to increase, especially in regions with strict environmental regulations, where R290 heat pumps have become the mainstream choice in the market. Furthermore, the promotion of China's "coal-to-electricity" and "coal-to-gas" policies also provides broad market opportunities for the downstream applications of R290 heat pumps.
