Selection of heat pump

Air source heat pump

An air source heat pump is driven by an electric motor and uses the heat in the air as a low-temperature heat source. It exchanges heat through an air conditioning condenser or evaporator, and then through the circulation system, extracts or releases thermal energy, using the unit's circulation system to transfer energy to meet the user's demand inside the building.

Advantages:

1. Wide applicability: Suitable for a temperature range of -7 to 40℃, and can be used all year round in all weather conditions, unaffected by adverse weather such as cloudy, rainy, or snowy days, as well as winter nights, and can function normally.

2. Low operating cost: Outstanding energy-saving effect; compared with gas, electric, and electrically-assisted solar water heaters, it has the lowest annual cost.

3. Environmentally friendly product: No pollution or combustion emissions, and does not cause harm to the human body.

Disadvantage:

1. Because the air source is a dispersed energy source, the heating speed is slow and the thermal efficiency is not very high.

2. Air source heat pumps are prone to frosting problems and are limited by region. In extremely low temperature environments of -10℃ or lower, there is little heat energy in the air, the amount of convertible heat energy is limited, and the working efficiency will be greatly reduced.

Water source heat pump

Water source heat pumps utilize low-grade thermal energy resources formed by solar energy and geothermal energy absorbed in shallow surface water sources of the earth, such as groundwater, rivers, and lakes. Using the principle of heat pumps, they transfer low-grade thermal energy to high-grade thermal energy with a small amount of high-level electrical input.

Advantages:

1. Water source heat pumps are convenient for centralized management. For parks of different sizes and phased construction, one or several water source heat pump units can be installed, making phased management easier.

2. Water source heat pumps can provide heat and also supply cooling in summer, achieving multiple functions in one unit to meet the heating and cooling needs of public buildings.

3. No waste, clean and environmentally friendly. Water source heat pumps utilize the energy of underground water resources. Water source heat pumps save more than two-thirds of the electricity compared to electric boilers and more than half of the energy compared to fuel boilers, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Disadvantage:

1. Due to limitations of water source conditions, some cities prohibit extraction and use to protect groundwater from pollution; water source heat pumps using rivers, lakes, and ponds are also affected by many factors such as seasonal water level decline. The usage of water source heat pumps is subject to many conditions.

2. The initial investment for ground source heat pumps is relatively high, and the system is complex with a high installation difficulty. Ground source heat pumps have higher requirements for design, construction, and on-site management, requiring the participation of professional technical personnel.

Ground source heat pump

A ground source heat pump refers to all heat pumps that use the earth as a source of heat and cold, including soil heat pumps (i.e., ground-coupled heat pumps), groundwater heat pumps, surface water heat pumps (including water from rivers, lakes, and seas), etc. Strictly speaking, ground source heat pumps are a type of water source heat pump.

Advantages:

1. Low operating costs: Ground source heat pumps take advantage of the relatively stable underground temperature throughout the year. With a COP value of over 4, they save 30%-40% more electricity than conventional central air conditioning when producing the same cooling and heating effects.

2. Energy saving and environmentally friendly: On the indoor side, chilled water is used for delivery, reducing the amount of refrigerant needed and thus decreasing atmospheric pollution; on the outdoor side, the heat exchange environment changes from air to soil or water, reducing atmospheric heat emissions and mitigating the heat island effect. Only a small amount of electricity is consumed, and during operation, no gases that pollute the environment such as carbon dioxide are produced, nor does leakage affect the health of indoor occupants.

Disadvantage:

The initial investment of a ground source heat pump is relatively high. A small household ground source heat pump system costs more than a hundred thousand yuan for the initial investment, and the cost of a large commercial ground source heat pump is even higher.
In summary, whether it is a ground source heat pump, a water source heat pump, or an air source heat pump, they all belong to clean energy and can play a role in energy saving and environmental protection to some extent. Although the initial investment cost of a ground source heat pump is high, its later operating costs are low, and long-term use can compensate for the installation cost. As for which one is better, as mentioned before, it depends on your operating environment and your budget. Choosing the one that suits you best is the best option.
